I love running in May in the Netherlands! It’s usually warmer that earlier in Spring. And dryer. And less windy.. And so many beautiful runs to select from every weekend!!!

 

Let’s look what is on the menu on the first weekend of May:

  • On the 3rd of May let’s celebrate Freedom running the Bevrijdingsloop in Alblasserdam. Enjoy the beautiful stroll along windmills of Kinderdijk.
  • On the 4th of May come to Utrecht province for Maxima parkrun. Join gratis, nice and friendly, weekly 5km run organized by local municipality of Vleuten
  • This day you can also join a weekly gratis 5km Parkrun in Kralingse Bos in Rotterdam. The run starts at Plaszoom.
  • Sunday 5th of May you gotta choose from 2 epic runs:
    • Come to Breda for the flagship run of Wings for Life World Run. Take your wings and run!
    • Or join the Muur van Emmen. It’s a tough run with distances 2.5, 5 or 10k, part of the trail on  stairs with 155 steps on the Walls of Emmen.

2nd weekend of May brings some more running fun:

  • Before the weekend starts, on the 8th of May join the iconic night run of the Alkmaar City Run by night. Enjoy 5 and 10 km of run through beautifully lighted city centrum and lots of various entertainments along the trail. Alkmaar is famous for the Night Lights events. Have fun!
  • Weekend of 10-12th May experience the Koning van Spanje Trail. This is the run when just one race is not enough. You need a full weekend for this trail. It offers one night trail, relaxed 10 km and up to ultra 80km run!
  • On Saturday 11th May you have a great opportunity to explore beautiful Dutch on the walk or run if you prefer:
    • Series of City Walks is taking place in Haarlem.
    • Leiden hosts a walking event prior to Leiden marathon on Sunday.
    • In a small village of Drenthe you can join the Run van Gieten. Experience the authentic Netherlands.
  • Sunday 12th of May you can stay in Amsterdam for the KLM Urban Trail Or come to Leiden – run one of the biggest running events of Spring: the Leiden marathon!

 

If you think that the long weekend of Witte Monday there is not much to run in the Netherlands – every weekend something is running on! The 3rd weekend of May is not an exception!

  • 17th of May is the Beach time! Come to Katwijk aan Zee for the Run aan Zee. Be ready for sand, wind and salty sprinkles of sea water in the air!
  • 18th of May is the good time to be in Amsterdam. Get down at Bijlmer Arena, do some shopping, concerts, movies and run the Bijlmer Run.
  • Sunday of 19th of May choose between 2 iconic Dutch towns:
    • Run through the history of Breda with the Breda marathon (organized by Run2Day) or
    • come to Utrecht for Utrecht Science Park marathon – this also has a good cause, sponsoring important medical & health studies.

 

End of May is truly surprising and eventful!

  • Weekend 25-26th May you can devote to fortresses:)
    • Come to Drenthe for Loopfestijn on the 25th of May.
    • Next day join the Vestingloop in ‘s-Hertogenbosch. Here you can choose between various distances and events, incl. 15km trail run and 2 walking events.
  • The last biggest running event of Spring – Amersfoort Marathon. With the start and finish in the city centrum this run is a perfect opportunity to discover this beautiful medieval Dutch town!
  • On Sunday 26th of May you can experience probably one of the most unpredictable runs: RUNexpected. During this run you will meet different surprises on the run, like bears on the road, snowfall, cakes flying into face and more.. perfect sports fun for families and everyone!
  • End of May (24-26th May) - Challenge yourself at Down Under Obstacle run in Amsterdam. Reveal your inner Viking!

Finish the running May with another unique event: Station tot Station Loop. Run 10 English miles from station Ommen till station Dalfsen. Why do you need trains when you have two running legs!
